K9s For Warriors Graduates 600th Service Dog Team

Graduation ceremony is tonight, 1/23, and open to the public

(Ponte Vedra, Fla.) – K9s For Warriors, the nation’s largest provider of service dogs for disabled American veterans, will graduate its 600th warrior-K9 team today, Thursday, January 23, 2020 at a ceremony at Camp K9 in Ponte Vedra. Graduation is open to the public and will commence at 5:00 p.m.

This milestone will be reached nine years after K9s For Warriors first opened its doors to help veterans who suffer from PTSD, TBI and/or MST. Founded in 2011, Shari Duval began K9s For Warriors to help her son, Brett Simon, recover from his own experience with PTSD. As of today, not only will the nonprofit graduate over 600 warriors, but it will have rescued over 1,100 dogs who were also given a new “leash” on life when being selected for the program.

“Every graduate matters deeply to us, but, of course, these milestones are especially rewarding,” stated Brett Simon, president of K9s For Warriors. “The success of this program shows that service dogs truly benefit our veterans battling PTSD and is a testament to our staff who work so hard for our lifesaving mission every day.”

K9s For Warriors is a national nonprofit that takes eligible shelter dogs and trains them to be service dogs to mitigate symptoms of PTSD, Traumatic Brain Injury, and/or Military Sexual Trauma for post-9/11 servicemembers and veterans. It operates from two facilities in North Florida that procure and train the canines, pair them with an incoming veteran, then train the veteran and canine pair together. After three weeks with his or her new service dog, the veteran has learned how to reintegrate into society and, most importantly, reduce suicidal ideation.

K9s For Warriors has graduated more disabled veterans with service dogs than any other organization in the country.

About K9s For Warriors

Two lives are transformed with each pairing: the veteran reduces his/her risk of suicide while the rescue dog receives a newfound purpose.
